Port Wine Stain Birthmarks are vascular lesions caused by venual malformations that allow blood to pool in the affected area. It is generally believed that the underlying cause is a defect in the nerves that control the diameter of the affected blood vessels which allows them to dilate abnormally.

Port wine birthmarks are typically treated with Intense Pulse Light or Intense Pulse Laser. It takes several treatments to diminish the appearance of a port wine birthmark. Since the underlying cause is nerve related these birthmarks will generally reappear over time and require subsequent periodic retreatment to keep them faded.

Pigmented birthmarks (pigmented lesions) are sometimes called cafe-au-lait spots. They are caused by an excess of melanin in the underlying layers of your skin. The depth of these birthmarks varies from person to person, so accordingly the number of treatments required to remove them varies. Unlike vascular lesions they are unlikely to return after treatment.
